The Apotex Emergency Department is one of the busiest emergency departments in all of Canada.

, home to one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, faces a common challenge shared by hospitals across Canada: a crowded emergency room and extended wait times for non-urgent medical care.

This issue is especially pronounced at Humber’s Apotex Emergency Department, which sees an influx of patients without access to primary care. In our community, a mere 12.2% of the local population is enrolled with a family practitioner, which is significantly lower than the provincial average of 23.3%.

To address these urgent challenges and enhance healthcare resource management, ÍřşěşÚÁĎ is taking the lead with an AI-Enabled Virtual Queue Management Application—a patient-facing application and a staff-facing dashboard that will help patients receive the appropriate care at the appropriate time.

Our AI-Enabled Virtual Queue Management Application will provide patients with an accurately predicted arrival time at the ED for immediate care.

With this critical innovation, our Apotex Emergency Department could improve patient flow by advising the patient before they arrive whether they should come right now, come at a pre-arranged time later in the day, visit with a physician or nurse practitioner online or redirect the patient back to their primary care provider.

This innovative solution coming to our Apotex Emergency Department has secured a commitment of $1.5 million from Scale AI, a federal government incubator funding AI projects in support of better healthcare for Canadians.

Scale AI’s technology promises numerous benefits for Humber’s Apotex Emergency Department:

• Patients will be empowered with the flexibility to wait more comfortably at home. The system will provide them with an accurately predicted arrival time at the ED for immediate care, helping them avoid lengthy waits in the Hospital alongside other sick patients
• Our ED will be able to optimize resource allocation, reducing operational costs and enhancing overall efficiency
• A controlled flow of patients will reduce stress on ED physicians and staff, enabling them to focus on critical cases

Next steps to implementing our AI-Enabled Virtual Queue Management Application include the initial launch of the application and the funding of pivotal research measuring the benefits of virtual queuing at Humber River.

These research initiatives will be instrumental in shedding light on several critical aspects of this project. Their focus pertains to understanding existing AI tools, analyzing patient demographics, and evaluating quality metrics to ensure a robust and unbiased implementation of this innovative healthcare solution.

The application itself will begin rolling out this spring, starting with on-site use and then further expanding. In the meantime, this innovation builds on insights from our Research Institute, and a study exploring patient attitudes about waiting at home is nearing completion, providing further guidance for implementation. Humber’s Research Institute has also completed user testing on the kiosk application, and developers are refining it based on feedback. We are proud to announce the opening of 12 additional ICU beds on Level 8! This expansion represents Humber’s commitment to the long-term health and well-being of our community.

When the pandemic first hit, our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) quickly filled up the entire 6th floor of ÍřşěşÚÁĎ’s Wilson Site, accommodating 48 beds — one of the largest ICUs in the province. Yet, the demand for intensive care continued to outpace our capacity. In response to this pressing need, Humber took action. Our goal was to bolster our ICU capacity and ensure that we could meet the growing needs of our community for critical care.

We are proud to announce the opening of 12 additional ICU beds on Level 8. These beds are not a temporary fix; they are a permanent addition to our healthcare infrastructure. This expansion represents Humber’s commitment to the long-term health and well-being of our community.

With these new beds in place, we can provide intensive care to more patients, right here in our own neighborhood. This means fewer people will have to travel long distances to receive the critical care they need. It also means that we are better equipped to handle future challenges, whether they come in the form of another pandemic or other medical emergencies.

We are incredibly grateful to our donors whose generosity made this expansion possible. Their support has enabled us to enhance our ability to care for those who need it most. As we look to the future, we are confident that these additional ICU beds will play a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of our community for years to come.

Once in Humber’s , they received the care they needed, and Philip appreciated the way the staff went above and beyond.

“The most important thing someone could have done for us in that situation was to keep my family calm and provide care and information in a timely manner,” he says. “Humber did that.”

Recently, Philip and his wife Sherry made a $1 million commitment to ÍřşěşÚÁĎ, supporting our areas of greatest need.

“As Canadians, we have a lot of pride in our healthcare system,” says Sherry. “We knew we wanted to support healthcare and couldn’t think of a better place to start than our own Hospital, which has cared for our family and community.”

The Eversheds and their three children have lived in Etobicoke and North Toronto, and over the years their family has turned to Humber River Hospital and its legacy sites when they needed care.

“Every time I have been there, the staff have been excellent,” says Philip. “Even when I’ve had to wait, they’ve made sure I understood how long it would be and the reason I was waiting.”

In honour of Philip and Sherry’s donation, ÍřşěşÚÁĎ has installed their plaque in the Emergency Triage Corridor Fast Track Lounge.

This has made a huge impact on patients in trauma, like cardiac arrest and those with COVID-19 related illness, where timing is critical to preserve brain and body function!

Paediatric Resuscitation with the Neonatal Baton

Equipment that helps intubate paediatric patients in our Apotex Emergency Department that are struggling with their breathing due to respiratory viruses and other issues. The Baton works with a system called GlideScope AVL, which provides a clear view of the airway and enhanced maneuverability, for fast intubations where every second counts.

“Family was extremely important to her,” says Tanya’s spouse Brian.

Tanya was truly a beautiful soul who died way too soon.

“Family was extremely important to her,” says Tanya’s spouse Brian. “She loved spending time with her two dads as she like to call them, Willy and Ken. She loved her mom immensely and in the past few years started taking care of her due to Alzheimer. The care Tanya provided to her mom carried over to her patients at HRH. Tanya’s fondness and love for her siblings was second to none, her illness and subsequent death has been extremely hard for them to process.”

Tanya was a fashionista (she loved eyeglasses and shoes), she loved to traveling with her spouse, loved to bake and most of all loved calypso and soca music.

On January 11, 2022, Tanya Meikle passed away from cancer, peacefully at home with her family by her side. Tanya loved and excelled at her job as a Registered Nurse in Humber River Hospital’s Apotex Emergency Department (ED). Everyone who knew Tanya knew how much she cared about her patients and her co-workers.

“The biggest compliment was when staff or physicians came to Emergency as a patient themselves or with a family member it was Tanya they wanted to be their nurse,” says Jane Casey, Director of Emergency at Humber.

“I was a Clinical Practice Leader when Tanya joined our Emergency Department and had the privilege of doing her orientation,” says Leo Zhu, an ED Manager at Humber, “She was so eager to learn and very energetic. Over the years we sometimes worked very closely together and it was clear she cared about her patients very much. She loved to laugh and have fun, but she was also serious about advocating for anything they needed.”

After Tanya passed away, Tanya’s spouse Brian started a in her memory. Tanya’s friends and family came together to name a bench in her honour, in Humber River Hospital’s Healing Gardens just outside the Emergency Department. In August, surrounded by Brian, Tanya’s family, her colleagues, and her friends, Humber River Hospital Foundation unveiled Tanya’s bench and plaque.

“It feels fantastic that we’ve given back to the Hospital and the community she held dear to her heart.” says Brian.

“Tanya loved her job very much, so I wanted to keep her memory alive there,” says Brian. “She will live on at Humber. That was very important to me. It feels fantastic that we’ve given back to the Hospital and the community she held dear to her heart.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Humber River Hospital frontline staff, like the Apotex Emergency Department, have been working tirelessly around the clock, picking up extra shifts and working overtime, and sacrificing their lives and family time for our patients and the community.

During the early stages of COVID-19, a grateful patient named Sharon, had been brought to the ED a few times and received excellent care from the frontline staff, despite the trying times the Hospital was going through.

As a thank you for all their hard work and dedication and sacrifice, Sharon used her talents and created over 300 handcrafted paper gifts for the entire ED, dedicating more than 100 hours to design and perfectly create them.

“It meant a lot to me personally for them to provide the care that I needed during the pandemic because I couldn’t do what they’re doing,” Sharon said. “I admire their courage and bravery for being out there and giving up their time from their families, especially during the beginning, when nobody knew what was going on. That’s why I wanted to do this for them.”

Gifts for the Emergency Department

Sharon gifted the ED staff with paper gifts that she designed and created.

Due to the lockdown, Sharon found herself at home and needed an outlet to keep herself busy. Through her love and gift for art, she decided to make the paper gifts for the ED in gratitude for their service. In fact, Sharon has been using her talent as a way of encouraging others not just in Toronto, but also in Guyana, Haiti and Lebanon through different charitable organizations.

Some of the amazing paper gifts that Sharon designed and created included bookmarks, thank you tags and unique packets containing coffee, tea, cookies and chocolates that were graciously donated from Serena N Singh-Wills & Notary, Crawford Adventist Academy, Anava Financing and more.

“I take an active and whole-hearted role in whatever I take on because I don’t believe in doing things halfway. By using my time and talents to bless others, I was able to keep my sanity during the pandemic,” she said.

Delivery Day

In March, Sharon dropped off her paper-crafted gifts to the ED. The number of packages that Sharon had delivered blew away Soma Gobin, the Program Service Assistant in the Emergency Department.

“I couldn’t believe it. For her to put in all that time and work for our Emergency Department was amazing. I certainly know our staff will be so appreciative of her gifts,” Soma said.

Jane Casey, Program Director of Emergency and the , expressed her gratitude for Sharon’s gifts.

“It has been a long journey for all Hospital staff these past two years, but seeing that a patient hand-made these gifts for our department was lovely to see and is incredibly heartwarming,” Jane said.

Overall, giving back has always been apart of Sharon’s life and credits her parents for influencing her in that way. Sharon says that she lives by the golden rule of “do unto others what you would have them do unto you,” and hopes that others not only use their talents to give back to the Hospital, but to be a blessing in their community.

It’s a tie! Breast Health and the ICU are both winner’s at this year’s WINK Den!

Earlier this week, on the evening of International Women’s Day, 26 women of the Women in Kindness (WINK) virtually gathered onto their Zoom accounts with their cozy at-home experience kit, ready to hear directly from the two deserving Humber program finalists: Breast Health and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Rita DeMontis, Sun Media National Lifestyle Editor, was the special guest host of this year’s WINK Den. She took part in a fireside chat setup on the third floor of the Hospital with the WINK members watching online.

WINK members heard from both of the ICU and Breast Health’s physicians and staff to help them finalize their vote for which program would win this year’s $110,000+ gift.

The Winner Is …

It was a tough decision to make, but ultimately, the final count resulted in a tie! The ICU and Breast Health teams made history at this year’s WINK Den when they were both crowned as the winners!

Now, the $110,000 gift will be split in half between the two programs.

The ICU is planning to use their prize towards purchasing cardiac monitors and creating 12 new ICU beds as they provide care for the most critically ill patients in our community.

This will increase our total bed count to 60 ICU beds, allowing more critical care beds available for the sickest patients, keeping patients closer to home so families can visit easily and often and making sure Hospital services remain open, even in times of crisis and pandemic.

“Thank you so much! At the end of it all, we’re happy to be standing here with the Breast Health team and splitting your generous gift,” said Ronak Gandhi, ICU Clinical Operations Manager.

Meanwhile, the Breast Health team will use their gift towards improving their breast cancer patient’s experience through seed localization surgery.

Thanks to innovation and new technology, the Breast Health team is able to insert a small, implantable seed directly into the patient’s tumor, making this much more comfortable for them. They will be able to go about their daily lives prior to their surgery.

This one-stop shop of doctors, technologists and nurses helps breast cancer patients monitor, treat and recover from breast health issues.

WINK is a group of powerful women working together to support Humber River Hospital. Together, they decide where their funds will be used, making meaningful change throughout our Hospital community.

We profiled two of our previous WINK winners along with this year’s program finalists for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Breast Health.

Paula Villafana – Mental Health (2019/2020 Winner of WINK)Ěý

Paula Villafana is the Program Director for Mental Health and Addictions at Humber River Hospital. Paula represented the Mental Health and Addictions Program at the first WINK Den Event for the 2019-2020 season.ĚýĚýShe shares her joy and gratitude that the program was voted to win the $32,000 pot in combined donations.

“Winning the first-ever WINK Den Event has impacted the Mental Health and Addictions Program tremendously and we’re incredibly grateful to have been chosen,” Paula said. “Through donor support, we were able to help more patients gain access to tangible purchases likes iPads, digital thermometers, and new tables and chairs to accommodate the growth of group therapy sessions.”

Paula also mentioned how grateful patient, Joanne, who shared her story at the WINK Den event, is one of many success stories in the program. “Because of the community who supports the Hospital with donations, Joanne was able to get the help she needed and that truly means so much to us.”

Dr. Graham Black – NICU (2020/2021 Winner of WINK)Ěý

Dr. Graham Black, a pediatrician at Humber River Hospital. Dr. Black represented the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), who was voted as the winner at last year’s WINK Den Event.

“Knowing these group of women decided to raise and gift the NICU with $50,000 is amazing,” Dr. Black said. “Because of their decision, we are one step closer to purchasing a new ventilator for the NICU, one of four that will allow us to expand care for smaller and sicker babies.”

In addition, he said that this gift will help upgrade the NICU from a Level 2B to a Level 2C, which will provide care for babies that are born up to two and a half months earlier than expected.

“Seeing parents and their babies go home after staying in the NICU, sometimes for weeks and months at a time, always brings a smile to our NICU staff and myself. The kindness from these women has brought so much positive impact to our youngest patients and their families – more than they’ll know.”

Cecille Marville-Williams – ICU (Finalist for 2021/2022)

This year’s WINK Den Event program finalist is Cecile Marville-Williams, who represents the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Cecile is the Program Director of Critical Care, Cardiology, Respiratory and Oncology at Humber River Hospital.

This year’s WINK Den Event pot is over $100,000 thanks to the generosity of WINK members. Cecile says it would be incredibly meaningful if the ICU was chosen as this year’s winner, especially as the ICU continues to fight COVID-19.

“It has been an unprecedented two years because of the pandemic. Our ICU teams are now treating many unvaccinated patients and the immunocompromised, as well as dealing with staffing challenges and exhaustion…so it’s been a difficult time for us all,” Cecile said.

“Winning this year’s funding would allow us to purchase cardiac monitors for 12 new ICU beds, an expansion that would help us to better serve our community by having critical care beds available for the sickest patients, keeping patients closer to home so families can visit easily and often, and making sure Hospital services remain open, even in times of crisis and the ongoing pandemic.”

Natasha Batchelor – Breast Health (Finalist for 2021/2022) Ěý

Lastly, this year’s second WINK Den Event program finalist representative is Natasha Batchelor. Natasha is representing Breast Health as Humber River Hospital’s Breast Health Supervisor and Navigator.

Natasha will pitch Breast Health to the WINK members at this year’s WINK Den Event because the team is hoping to improve the patient experience through seed localization surgery. Traditionally, wire-guided localization has been used to locate and mark tumors inside a breast so they could easily be removed in surgery. Natasha says this is not the most comfortable procedure for the patient as the wire can stick out and shift if the patient moves too much or the wrong way.

“Thanks to innovation and new technology, we can now use a small, implantable seed that is inserted directly into the tumor,” Natasha said. “If Breast Health is given the opportunity to win this year’s WINK Den Event, it would allow much more comfort for the patient(s) when they come to the Hospital to get their seed-localization procedure done.”

Every year, the women of WINK decide together where their funds will be used, empowering them to make meaningful change throughout our Hospital community.

“One of our big promises to WINK supporters is that they will always be in control of their collective funds,” says Lindsay Owen, a Senior Development Officer at Humber River Hospital Foundation. “They have the power to direct their money, and they get insider access to the world of Humber to help them make informed decisions. Every year WINK grows bigger and better, and thanks to the generosity of our members, the pot is over $100,000 this year!”

Early this past December, 19 WINK Executive Members gathered together (and some virtually too!) at Have a Seat for the 2021 WINK Executive Pitch Event. Their task was to narrow it down to two deserving Humber programs that will advance to the WINK Den Event in March 2022. This time around, they heard from five Humber programs:

• • Breast Health
  • Humber Meadows Long-Term Care
  • Hysteroscopy Clinic
  • ICU Expansion
  • Long-COVID Research

After hearing all five pitches, the women of WINK ultimately voted on Breast Health (improving the patient experience through seed localization surgery) and the ICU expansion (cardiac monitors for 12 new beds).

Libby Wildman is one of the 19 WINK Executive Members who voted at the event. She says that the WINK members ultimately voted on the ICU expansion because of the information they received on the urgent need for more ICU beds in Ontario and how importantĚý this expansion is especially during a crisis like COVID-19.

In addition, Libby voting for Breast Health was easy, as it hits close to home for her. She shared her breast cancer experience where five years ago, she had the wire inserted (which will no longer be necessary with seed localization) and had fainted because the insertion process was so uncomfortable.

“Breast cancer affects so many women, young and old, and not one person I know, doesn’t have someone in their circle with breast cancer. So, I think we all feel very close to this issue,” Libby says. “Breast cancer to me needs to be something we manage as a population and early detection is key, along with accuracy of removing the cancer and getting clean margins. I believe this procedural improvement will do that.”

On March 8, all WINK Members will vote for the program who will receive over $100,000 in funding.Ěý Members will hear from program directors, physicians, staff and grateful patients to help them finalize who the winning program will be.

“My pregnancy with Amir was complicated. I have fibroids on my uterus and fallopian tube, which has given me horrible cramping and pain since I was a teenager. This made my pregnancy higher risk and nobody expected me to carry to term,” remembers Sehdeen.

Sehdeen’s journey at Humber River Hospital started in the Apotex Emergency Department (ED) where a fibroid in her uterus had put so much pressure on a kidney that it led to an infection. While Sehdeen was being treated for the infection in the ED, she learned she was pregnant.

“My pregnancy with Amir was complicated. I have fibroids on my uterus and fallopian tube, which has given me horrible cramping and pain since I was a teenager. This made my pregnancy higher risk and nobody expected me to carry to term,” remembers Sehdeen.

Dr. André LaRoche, Chief of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Humber, was leading Sehdeen’s care. Due to her fibroids and other complicating factors, the best course of action for her care was to coordinate several departments working together to ensure the safety of both mom and baby.

Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Interventional Radiology were all on standby for the C-Section. Since fibroids pull in extra blood supply to the uterus, balloon pumps were inserted at the hips before the C-Section to reduce blood flow to the uterus and mitigate the chance of Sehdeen bleeding too much during the surgery. Units of blood were prepared just in case Sehdeen needed it.

After the surgery, Sehdeen experienced heavy bleeding which required an iron transfusion as well as medication to help the bleeding stop. She was able to go home with her son, Amir, several days later.

Fast forward 9 months and Sehdeen has returned to Humber and back to Dr. LaRoche who used the da Vinci Surgical Robot to remove her fibroids. She asked Dr. LaRoche to leave one fibroid (the one on her fallopian tube) so she could continue to have children in the future.

Only a few days later, Amir was admitted to a hospital downtown. Thanks to the quicker healing time offered by this minimally invasive procedure using the da Vinci Surgical Robot, Sehdeen had recovered enough to be at Amir’s bedside.

I’m so grateful I was at Humber with the technology to perform this procedure,” says Sehdeen. Now, Amir is feeling better and Sehdeen is too. She says, “my quality of life has gone up so much. I’ve taken pain medication for the fibroids since I was a teenager, but after the surgery, I felt great.”

The da Vinci Surgical Robot is the centerpiece of the Murphy and Helen Hull Robotics Centre at Humber River Hospital. The Centre was established thanks to a transformational donation from the late Murphy and Helen Hull.
