Landmark philanthropic investment from the Hennick Family Foundation will accelerate innovation and patient care at North America’s first fully digital hospital

TORONTO, ON – April 10, 2026 – has announced that its Wilson site will be renamed Hennick Humber Hospital in recognition of a transformational $50 million donation from Jay and Barbara Hennick, through the Hennick Family Foundation. The donation represents one of the largest philanthropic investments ever made to a community hospital in Canada and will support the advancement of patient care, innovation, research, and education at the hospital.

“Jay and Barbara Hennick’s extraordinary generosity will have a lasting impact on the patients and communities we serve,” said Barb Collins, President and CEO of . “Their transformational gift will allow us to build on our strong foundation of innovation and accelerate the future of healthcare. By investing in advanced technologies, clinical programs, research, and education, this support will empower our teams to continue delivering the safest, highest quality care for our patients.” At the organization, a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability guides every decision, with a singular focus on delivering safe, compassionate, and high‑quality care.

The renaming of the hospital recognizes the Hennick family’s longstanding commitment to advancing healthcare in Canada and their belief that the model of care built at is not only working but leading the way. For patients, families and residents of northwest Toronto, this investment will allow the hospital to sustain and scale its current work, bringing improved models of care, new technologies, and new ideas forward sooner than would otherwise be possible.

Jay and Barbara Hennick, who both grew up in the surrounding community, share a deep connection with those served by the hospital. Their donation represents a meaningful investment back into the community that helped shape them, and a commitment to ensuring that future generations have access to exceptional care.

“When we considered another significant gift, we focused on where it could have the greatest impact,” said Jay and Barbara Hennick. “We sought a community hospital delivering exceptional care to a rapidly growing population—one whose achievements had outpaced the recognition and philanthropic support it had received. It quickly became clear that Humber fit that vision. The hospital is a leader in digital health, clinical integration, and patient‑centred care, offering the sophistication of a major academic centre with the accessibility and responsiveness of a first‑rate community hospital.”

Since opening its Wilson site, the organization has distinguished itself as a leader in healthcare innovation and system transformation. As North America’s first fully digital hospital, it introduced a fully-integrated electronic medical record system, real-time locating systems, and developed the first hospital Command Centre in Canada, which uses real-time data and artificial intelligence to monitor patient flow, predict capacity challenges, and improve operational efficiency across the organization. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, it’s safer care numbers are 60 per cent better than the provincial and national averages, marking the seventh consecutive year it has led hospital safety and patient care.

The hospital has also demonstrated measurable results through initiatives designed to improve access and patient experience. This includes ensuring zero hallway healthcare, so patients receive care in appropriate clinical spaces rather than hallways, despite managing the province’s busiest emergency department. In addition, the organization has also become a leader in robotic-assisted surgery, investing in advanced surgical platforms that allow physicians to perform highly precise procedures with improved outcomes and shorter recovery times for patients. As a result of its innovative surgical and anaesthetic approaches, the hospital has some of the lowest surgical wait times in the Greater Toronto Area. These technologies, combined with Humber’s digital infrastructure, enable clinicians to deliver safer, more coordinated, and more efficient care.

continues to advance new models of care that integrate hospital services with community care, helping to improve access to healthcare for one of the fastest-growing and most diverse regions in the province.

In recognition of the renaming of the Wilson site, the will continue operating under its corporate name, while adopting the name Hennick Humber Hospital Foundation to reflect fundraising efforts connected to the renamed hospital site. This recognizes the generosity of the Hennick family and reinforces the Foundation’s mission to inspire philanthropy in support of exceptional patient care.

“Philanthropy plays a powerful role in shaping the future of healthcare,” said Jennifer Stewart, President and CEO of . “Donor support allows hospitals to advance new ideas, invest in breakthrough technologies, and bring innovative models of care to patients sooner. Jay and Barbara Hennick’s generosity will accelerate progress at the hospital and will inspire others to join us in supporting exceptional care for generations to come.”

The renaming to Hennick Humber Hospital marks a new chapter for as it continues to build on its promise of delivering Tomorrow’s Healthcare, Today.

At Rustic Bakery, community isn’t just a word—it’s a way of life. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, this family-run bakery has long been a cornerstone of connection, comfort, and care in the neighbourhood.

The decision to support came from the very people Rustic Bakery serves—its family, friends, and loyal customers. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, many seniors in the community, living without close family nearby, turned to the bakery not just for food, but for guidance and connection.

became a lifeline for many. It was clear that this was more than a hospital—it was a pillar of the community.

Rustic Bakery’s annual golf tournament in support of has grown from a small idea into a cherished community tradition.

“Our seniors were always taken care of at Humber,” says Joey Loiero, son of founder Mirella Loiero. “During COVID, when social distancing made everything harder, they came to us for answers. Humber was their go-to for treatment and care.”

For the Loiero family, that connection is deeply personal.

“Our kids were born there. Our family was cared for there,” says Mirella. “It’s not just our hospital—it’s our community’s hospital.”

Rustic Bakery’s annual golf tournament in support of has grown from a small idea into a cherished community tradition. Their 2025 tournament raised $34,750 for , bringing their total contribution to $50,050 —a remarkable testament to the power of community generosity.

In honour of their tremendous impact, a courtesy suite on the 8th floor of ’s Wilson Site now bears the Rustic Bakery name—a space created to give back once again to the community that has always supported them. It’s a haven for families to rest while their loved ones receive care, offering comfort and warmth that mirrors the feeling of walking into Rustic Bakery itself. Just like the bakery, this space is rooted in connection, compassion, and being there when people need it most.

“We never imagined we’d be here 40 years later,” Mirella reflects. “We couldn’t have grown without the support of our community. Putting our name on the hospital walls is something we never dreamed of—it’s all thanks to the passion, drive, and love from the people around us.”

The Golf Tournament That Keeps Growing

On May 26, 2026, the fifth annual Rustic Bakery Golf Tournament will take place at Lebovic Golf Club, continuing a legacy of unity and care for a hospital that has touched countless lives.

This year’s event holds special meaning as Rustic Bakery celebrates its 40th anniversary—a milestone made possible by the unwavering support of the community. That same support helped Rustic earn a lasting place within , with a courtesy suite now bearing its name—a true symbol of community strength and connection.

In honour of their tremendous impact, a courtesy suite on the 8th floor of ’s Wilson Site now bears the Rustic Bakery name.

To Rustic Bakery, Community Means Responsibility.

Rustic Bakery began when Mirella Loiero and her family took over from the previous owners, expanding the original storefront into a thriving hub that now includes a bakery, grocery, grab-and-go meals, and event catering.

“It’s about keeping people happy, healthy, and engaged,” says Mary, Mirella’s daughter. “We’re like family with our customers, and they treat us like family in return.”

That philosophy is baked into everything Rustic does—from offering traditional Italian comfort food that reminds people of home, to creating a space where seniors can socialize and kids can grab gelato after school.

From daily coffees to wedding cakes, Rustic Bakery has grown into a one-stop shop that serves generations. But its impact goes far beyond its delicious cannoli—it’s about giving back.

As Ontario’s healthcare system faces unprecedented strain, is taking decisive action to help build a stronger, future-ready workforce with the launch of the James B. Neill Centre for Applied Simulation and Innovation— a $10 million project led by a transformative $5 million gift from philanthropist James B. Neill.

Scheduled to open in September 2027 the Centre will provide advanced, simulation-based training to more than 7,000 doctors, surgeons, nurses, and support staff each year.

Ontario is facing a projected shortage of 78,000 doctors by 2031 and 117,600 nurses by 2030. The need to train and retain skilled healthcare professionals has never been greater, and simulation-based training offers a proven solution. Simulation training can reduce medical errors, improve patient safety, and is estimated to deliver a 101.7% return on investment over four years by lowering turnover and increasing efficiency.

“The James B. Neill Centre for Applied Simulation and Innovation will expand career pathways in Ontario, strengthen our workforce, and shape a future-ready healthcare system,” says Jennifer Stewart, President & CEO of .

Redefining the Future of Care

The James B. Neill Centre for Applied Simulation and Innovation will feature a 3,195-square-foot, state-of-the-art learning environment that empowers healthcare professionals to practice critical, high-stakes decision-making in realistic, risk-free scenarios. Using high-fidelity simulators, trainees will navigate situations ranging from patient deterioration to emergency response — fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and evidence-based care.

Every year, the Centre will support training for:

  • 2,000 nursing students
  • 200 allied health students
  • 700 physicians
  • 350 medical learners
  • 4,000 clinical staff, as well as first responders, community partners, and healthcare collaborators

will increase training capacity for nurses by 18%, enabling an additional 280 nurses to be trained each year — directly addressing critical labour gaps in Northwest Toronto and beyond.

Training will include advanced robotic and surgical systems such as the ROSA® Knee System and da Vinci Xi® Surgical Robot — technologies that have already improved patient outcomes, reduced healing times, and helped Humber address surgical wait times through greater precision and efficiency.

“By investing in advanced simulation technology, we will not only equip our healthcare professionals with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of modern medicine, but also position Humber as a model for healthcare innovation across the province,” said Dr. Sebastian Rodriguez-Elizalde, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Co-Chair of the Robotics Program at .

The James B. Neill Centre for Applied Simulation and Innovation will also feature lifelike, high-fidelity mannequins such as Lucina, a childbirth simulator that enables healthcare teams to safely practice every stage of labour and delivery — from early contractions to complex emergencies. Beyond typical labour scenarios, Lucina simulates sudden complications such as cardiac arrest and postpartum hemorrhage, giving trainees the opportunity to build confidence, refine teamwork, and prepare for the unpredictable realities of patient care.

“This is all about investing in the future,” said James B. Neill, a lifelong community advocate. “We are training people today to perform life-changing care in years to come.”

Strengthening the System

Through this investment, is preparing to meet both immediate workforce needs and long-term system demands.

The Centre will serve as a hub of innovation and collaboration, supporting interprofessional learning across clinical and non-clinical staff, medical learners, and healthcare industry partners from and other hospitals.

“This transformational gift has helped bring our vision to life,” says Jennifer Stewart, President & CEO of . “The James B. Neill Centre for Applied Simulation and Innovation will expand career pathways in Ontario, strengthen our workforce, and shape a future-ready healthcare system beyond the walls of as we embark on building the next chapter of leading-edge, safe, efficient and equitable healthcare.”

“The James B. Neill Centre for Applied Simulation and Innovation represents a bold step forward in empowering our people and advancing high-quality care,” says Barbara Collins, President & CEO of . “By expanding opportunities for learning, teaching, and career development, we are not only enhancing safety and excellence in patient care but also reinforcing the collaborative partnerships that drive innovation. As always, remains a leader in building a future-ready healthcare system, one that reflects our values and sets a new standard for care.”

For a decade, has been transforming care through digital innovation and compassion. Now, we’re building the next decade of firsts.

A Legacy of Firsts

Building on a decade of firstsFor ten years, has been more than a hospital. We’ve been a pioneer. From the moment we opened our doors in 2015 as North America’s first fully digital hospital, we set out to redefine what’s possible in healthcare. Our vision combined cutting-edge technology with patient-centred care, and the results speak for themselves.

In 2017, Humber launched Canada’s first hospital , a revolutionary hub that streamlines patient care in real time using data-driven insights. This innovation has allowed our teams to respond faster, allocate resources more efficiently, and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.

We’ve also led breakthroughs in robotic-assisted surgeries, giving patients safer, less invasive procedures and shorter recovery times. These milestones are more than technical achievements. Each ‘first’ represents countless lives saved, families supported, and communities cared for.

None of this would have been possible without our donors, supporters, staff, volunteers, and patients. Together, we’ve proven what’s possible when compassion and innovation come first.

The People Behind the ‘Firsts’

Behind every first, is a person whose life was changed. Humber’s innovations touch real people in profound ways.

FMiriamrom pain to possibility: Miriam’s journey

Miriam chose Humber for her first knee replacement using the ROSA® Knee System. With the help of robotics and the mymobility® app, she recovered faster than expected and was traveling just six weeks later. “I never imagined I could get back on my feet so quickly,” Miriam says.

GeorgeFinding hope in struggle: George’s story

Twelve-year-old George began his journey with Humber’s mental health team to manage OCD and suicidal thoughts. With ongoing support and guidance, he’s building hope and coping skills for the future. George’s story shows that firsts aren’t just about technology — they’re about providing care and compassion when it’s needed most.

LioudmilaIndependence restored: Lioudmila’s story

Lioudmila regained independence and energy through Humber’s home dialysis program. Today, she can care for her children and live life on her own terms. “This program changed my life — it’s like another family,” she says.

The Next Decade of Firsts Starts with You

The journey doesn’t stop here. The next decade of firsts will build on the foundations of innovation, compassion, and community support that have defined from day one.

Your gift ensures that Humber continues to lead in life-saving programs, advanced technology, and compassionate care, giving patients the best possible outcomes for years to come.

Join us today to help shape the future of healthcare and continue the legacy of firsts. Every donation moves us closer to new breakthroughs, faster recoveries, and better care for everyone who walks through our doors.

Together, we can continue transforming lives.

Whether it’s helping Miriam get back on her feet, giving George hope for the future, or restoring Lioudmila’s independence, every first at represents a life touched by care, technology, and community support. Be part of the next decade of firsts — because the future of healthcare starts with you.

Anthony Whyte

Anthony Whyte, President and CEO of the Go Integrated Group of Companies

When Anthony James Whyte first saw the Canadarm, Canada’s robotic contribution to space exploration, he was captivated. “I was so intrigued by the Canadarm when it launched in 1981,” Anthony shares. “It inspired me to study electronics, to dream bigger, to build something that could make a difference.”

That early fascination with innovation has remained a guiding force throughout his life. Today, Anthony serves as President and CEO of the , a multi-sector enterprise focused on logistics and transportation, real estate development, and energy solutions. While his business continues to expand and grow, it’s his most recent act of generosity that’s propelling healthcare advancements here at home.

Anthony’s recent $1 million donation to ’s Robotic Surgery Program helped close the gap on our $10 million Robotic Campaign—two years ahead of schedule. This transformational support means more patients will benefit from minimally invasive procedures, faster recoveries, and the kind of compassionate, high-tech care that simply wouldn’t exist without donor generosity.

Though he gave without seeking recognition, the impact of Anthony’s gift will be felt for years to come. “All the technology is great,” he says, “but at the end of the day, I care about how we’re making a difference in someone’s life.”

For Anthony, this commitment to advancing equitable and innovative healthcare is deeply personal. Born in Georgetown, Guyana, he immigrated to Canada in 1982, carrying with him the values instilled by his parents and grandmother: integrity, generosity, and the belief that success means little if it’s not shared.

“The principles I was taught are the same ones I live by today—work hard, stay humble, and give back.”

His sense of responsibility to give back was shaped early on. Years ago, while visiting Toronto, his grandmother suffered a heart attack and was treated at Humber’s legacy site on Keele. It was a difficult time for his family, marked by the stress and uncertainty that can come with a medical crisis—both personally and practically. That experience stayed with Anthony and became a quiet promise to himself: if he was ever in a position to ease that kind of burden for others, he would.

Today, Anthony is fulfilling that promise—not only as a business leader and philanthropist, but as a husband and father. He and his wife, Joanne, are raising three children—two of whom have pursued careers in healthcare. Their shared values—rooted in service, humility, and compassion—are what drive the Whyte family to support initiatives that make a tangible impact in people’s lives.

“If you don’t invest in technology today, you won’t know how far it can go tomorrow,” Anthony says. “That’s what this gift is really about—making sure we’re part of what’s next.”

Still, Anthony sees this as just the beginning. He hopes his story will inspire others, especially fellow entrepreneurs and emerging philanthropists, to step forward and invest in the future of healthcare.

“There’s enough out there for all of us to enjoy—and enough for us to share. Even if you start small, it matters.”

With his donation, Anthony Whyte isn’t just advancing robotic surgery, he’s honouring the legacy of those who raised him and setting an example for the next generation. Together, with his family, he is helping to build a healthcare system where innovation and compassion go hand in hand.

“As my kids begin their own careers, I want them to reach out and touch lives,” shares Anthony. “Even one week a year to volunteer their time. That’s the kind of legacy I hope we leave.”

Just as the Canadarm once inspired him to imagine what was possible, Anthony’s generosity is now helping shape a new era of care—one where technology transforms lives and access is more equitable than ever.

At Humber, healthcare isn’t just about machines and medicine. It’s about people. It’s about progress. And it’s about what we can achieve when visionary donors like Anthony choose to give.

“Every stage of my involvement with the hospital was rewarding. There were though, some moments I will never forget…. the ground-breaking ceremony when all the stakeholders put their shovels in the ground in unison and we knew that the project would get built; and then subsequently, when they dug the hole for the foundation, and we could see the scale of what would become a 1.8 million square foot facility. These were thrilling events. ” Donald Loeb

Donald and Lorraine Loeb recently made the generous decision to make Humber River Health Foundation the owner and beneficiary a life insurance policy—a creative and impactful way to leave a legacy, and a meaningful reflection of their personal connection to the hospital.

With four grown and independent children, Donald and Lorraine realized they no longer needed the security of this policy; but rather than simply giving it up, they decided that it was a better idea—from both a charitable giving and tax benefit perspective—to name as the owner and beneficiary of the policy.

Their reasons for choosing Humber for their generous commitment date back to 1999/2000 when Donald joined ’s Board of Directors, subsequently accepting the role of Chair of the Board and eventually Chair of the Building Committee.

“I felt like I could make a difference at Humber,” says Donald. “And leading the board through the creation of the new Humber River Hospital [now ]—from the key decision not to renovate but rather to seek a greenfield site and to design and build a state-of-the-art facility—through to the official opening —was a profound experience. I was fortunate to work with the hospital’s current CEO Barb Collins and her predecessor, the, to help conceive the remarkable vision that would become . We were then able to realize the vision with the support and commitment of the Board and the talented and dedicated individuals on the building committee; we were highly focused on completing it on time and on budget, and we succeeded!”

“Every stage of my involvement with the hospital was rewarding,” remembers Donald. “There were though, some moments I will never forget…. the ground-breaking ceremony when all the stakeholders put their shovels in the ground in unison and we knew that the project would get built; and then subsequently, when they dug the hole for the foundation, and we could see the scale of what would become a 1.8 million square foot facility. These were thrilling events. Of course, touring the finished hospital and seeing it function as planned and understanding its impact on patient care and even enjoying the fantastic views from the top floors were heartwarming.”

Donald and Lorraine’s belief in made the decision to name Humber as beneficiary of a life insurance policy quite easily. Also surprisingly easy was the process of setting up this arrangement. They collaborated closely with their financial advisor and with Caterina Magisano, the Foundation’s Vice President of Development, to turn their vision into reality; Humber’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee was also available to provide support with additional wealth insurance expertise along the way.

By making a commitment to leave a legacy at , the Loebs have become the newest members of our Aspen Grove Society, a group of donors committed to supporting Humber through their estate planning.

The Loebs decided not to direct their donation to a specific program or area, but rather to let the hospital allocate it. “My decades of working with senior management has taught me that they have the clearest insight as to where the needs are greatest.”

“We are pleased to remain involved with Humber,” says Lorraine. “Once the hospital opened, it was rewarding to see that people were coming from all over the world to tour the first fully digital hospital in North America. Now, we are regularly hearing from people we know who are going out of their way to choose Humber not only for the hospital’s leading-edge facilities but also its reputation for compassionate care.

For seniors with cognitive impairments and behavioural needs, traditional hospital settings can feel disorienting. Bright lights, loud noises, and constant activity often worsen confusion and distress. At (Humber), we’re introducing a solution: the Acute Behavioural Assessment & Management Unit (ABAMU), a specialized unit designed to provide compassionate, safe care for seniors with dementia and other cognitive conditions.

Acute Behavioural Assessment Management

“We saw distressed families, patients waiting far too long, and a fragmented system. It became a burning platform to do something different.” Beatrise Edelstein, Vice President of Post Acute Care and Health System Partnerships

“The inspiration came from a lack of appropriate resources in acute care to support patients with behavioural needs,” says , Vice President of Post Acute Care and Health System Partnerships. “We saw distressed families, patients waiting far too long, and a fragmented system. It became a burning platform to do something different.”

The ABAMU, which will be located at Humber’s Finch campus, will serve as a regional resource for seniors requiring both acute medical care and behavioral support. Designed to minimize environmental triggers, it will feature 12 private rooms, a communal dining space, and specialty bathrooms—all tailored for safety, comfort, and dignity.

“Hospitals are complex and chaotic environments designed in a way that increases the risk of behaviors—the noise, the lights, the constant staff changes,” says , Executive Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive, Chief of Clinical Programs. “We wanted to create a therapeutic environment where we can still deliver acute care without compromising the overall patient’s well-being.”

Acute Behavioural Assessment Management

“We wanted to create a therapeutic environment where we can still deliver acute care without compromising the overall patient’s well-being.” Carol Hatcher, Executive Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive, Chief of Clinical Programs.

The need is urgent. Seniors account for over 73% of Humber’s inpatient population, with many experiencing cognitive decline.

What will set the ABAMU apart isn’t just its environment—it’s the people. Staff will receive enhanced training in geriatric and behavioural care, building a team deeply passionate about serving this population. “This isn’t just extra orientation,” Beatrise explains. “These are individuals who want to work with patients with dementia and are trained in the nuances of care for this group.”

The ABAMU model is also expected to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs. “When we change the environment and deliver the right care, in the right place, the patient’s overall health outcomes can be optimized quicker, therefore length of stay should be shorter,” says Carol. “And it will be a less expensive model for delivering better care then in a traditional hospital bed.”

Outside of patients, the ABAMU is also being designed to support caregivers. “We see caregiver burden, guilt, and burnout,” says Beatrise. “This unit will help families navigate the journey with dignity and support, not just for their loved one, but for themselves.”

This vision cannot become a reality without community support. “We can’t do this without donors,” says Carol. “This is a capital build—innovative care like this requires investment.” At Humber, we believe that healthcare thrives when it’s equitable, accessible, and compassionate. The ABAMU is a step toward that future—where dignity in aging is not a privilege, but an expectation.

Acute Behavioural Assessment & Management Unit

The ABAMU will redefine care for seniors with complex cognitive impairments and expressive behaviours—but we can’t build it without you. Donate today to help create a sanctuary of healing, dignity, and hope for our most vulnerable. For more information, please contact Caterina Magisano (cmagisano@hrh.ca)

For more than 30 years, Earl Karamath has been quietly shaping the heart of . Not from an operating room or behind a desk, but in the corridors and patient spaces where quiet acts of care make a lasting difference.

As a Maintenance Mechanic and proud member of Humber’s Very Own (HVO), Earl embodies the spirit of humble generosity. “Humber has been my second family,” he says. “It’s not a job to me, it’s a passion. We look after the sick, and I do whatever I can to help.”

Earl and his family

“All the schools I attended were founded by Canadians. They helped me so much, so giving to Humber is my way of giving back to Canada and Canadians.” Earl Karamath

Earl and his wife left Trinidad for Toronto in 1989, seeking treatment for a medical condition that couldn’t be managed back home. They settled near Weston and Church, unaware that down the street stood the former Humber Memorial Hospital, now Humber’s Church campus. It was there that Earl’s wife received care and where the course of his own life would inevitably change.

“My first job was in Brampton. I had to take three buses to get there every day,” Earl recalls. “I used to pray every day that I’d get a job closer to home. One day I saw a little ad in the Toronto Sun for a Maintenance Mechanic at Humber. I applied, and the rest is history.”

Earl found more than a job—he found an extended family and a renewed purpose. “I used to give my offering to my church, but once I started working Sundays, I couldn’t go,” he says. “So, I began giving my tithes to the Foundation. That was in 1990, and I’ve been giving ever since.”

One team member had a significant impact on Earl’s journey. “From day one, my Lead Hand, Tony Pelullo, has guided, mentored, and looked out for my well-being,” Earl shares, adding, “He made me feel welcome on the Maintenance Team, and over the years, we’ve worked well together.”

After 25 years of service, Earl retired in 2015. However, just two years later, he received a call from Barb Collins, President and CEO of , asking him to return to support the reopening of Humber’s Finch Campus.

“When the decision was made to reopen the Finch site, Tony asked Barb to rehire me to assist with the project, and she approved,” Earl explains. “I was honoured and I’m grateful to both Barb and Tony for the opportunity.”

Earl continues to be a steady, compassionate presence across Humber’s campuses. One moment that stands out for him involves a distressed patient who had lost her wedding ring. “I remember a patient lost her wedding ring down the sink,” he recalls. “She was so upset. I took the sink apart and found the ring. She wouldn’t stop hugging me.”

Whether rescuing a ring or adjusting the heat in a patient’s room, Earl takes pride in the small things that provide comfort. “I see patients every day. Some are in their final days, so it means a lot to bring them even a little peace. Whatever it is, whatever the patients need, we try to accommodate them.”

His generous spirit goes beyond fundraising. “I give my time too, staying late to get things done,” he says. “I was taught to give, and I always try to give what I can.”

That spirit of giving was instilled in Earl from a young age. Growing up in Trinidad, he was influenced by Canadians who helped with his education. Supporting Humber, Earl says, is his way of giving back.

“Growing up in Trinidad, my life was touched by Canadian missionaries,” Earl shares. “All the schools I attended were founded by Canadians. They helped me so much, so giving to Humber is my way of giving back to Canada and Canadians.”

And what would he say to someone thinking about becoming a donor? “I would absolutely encourage them,” Earl says. “I’ve seen so many people in need. Some are completely helpless. In my heart, I feel I’m here to support them. I just wish I could give more.”

At , every act of generosity is a spark for transformative change. Few stories capture this better than that of the Rogers-Hixon family. For nearly two decades, the philanthropy of Melinda Rogers-Hixon and her husband, Eric, has been rooted in a shared commitment to making a meaningful difference, guided by deeply held family values and personal experiences.

“Philanthropy is a core value for our family. It serves as a reminder of our interconnectedness. It allows us to engage with the world beyond ourselves, fostering a sense of shared responsibility to uplift others,” Melinda shares. “It’s about recognizing the privileges we have and using them to uplift others.”

From COVID-19 testing programs to the Robotic Surgery Program and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Urgent Care Clinic, Melinda and Eric have supported initiatives that connect with their belief in creating sustainable, long-term and meaningful change.

As parents to four wonderful kids, Melinda and Eric have been particularly passionate about initiatives that have a direct impact on the health and well-being of children and their families.

“Humber’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Urgent Care Clinic stood out as an essential program – offering immediate and compassionate support for children and teens in crisis,” Melinda explains. “Supporting this program aligns with our commitment to nurturing the next generation by prioritizing their mental and emotional well-being.”

Their connection to Humber is also deeply personal. When Melinda’s mother, Loretta Anne Rogers, suddenly passed away from cancer, the loss profoundly reshaped the couple’s mindset.

“Her diagnosis was unexpected, and the progression of her illness moved so quickly that it left our family reeling,” Melinda recalls. “It was an incredibly difficult and emotional journey for everyone involved—one that gave us a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by patients and their families navigating cancer care.”

The experience of losing her mother left Melinda and Eric determined to concentrate their philanthropic efforts towards investing in the well-being of others. Now having donated $500,000 to date, the is honouring the couple’s generosity with a donor plaque outside the Cancer Care Lounge.

Rogers-Hixon Family Lounge + Plaque

“The Cancer Care Lounge represents comfort and support for patients and families during some of the most challenging times,” says Melinda. “To have our recognition in a place dedicated to providing care, empathy, and hope feels like a fitting tribute to my mother’s legacy.”

Melinda and Eric’s story showcases the profound impact donors can have, not just on Humber’s ability to innovate, but on the lives of those navigating critical health challenges. Their continued support ensures that can carry on its mission of transforming healthcare through compassion and cutting-edge solutions.

“Healthcare funding in Canada is under strain, and the system cannot meet the high standards Canadians deserve without additional support,” the couple explains. “We feel a strong sense of responsibility to step in where we can help provide the funding and resources that go beyond what government support alone can achieve.”

Thank you, Melinda and Eric Rogers-Hixon, for your continued support! Your generosity exemplifies the power of philanthropy, and the Humber community is profoundly grateful for your lasting legacy and your vision for meaningful change.
