Isabelle’s Story: Pediatric Surgery with Humber’s Child Life Program
With support from Humber’s Child Life Program, Isabelle and her family experienced compassionate, child-centred care throughout her surgical journey.

For any parent, hearing that their child needs surgery can feel overwhelming. Questions, fears, and uncertainty can quickly take over, especially when trying to stay calm for a child who may not fully understand what’s happening.
When Isabelle began experiencing discomfort from a hernia, her mother Carolyn knew surgery would be necessary. While they trusted the care team at , the thought of surgery was still intimidating for them both.
But from the moment they arrived at Humber, their experience felt different.
Through ’s Child Life Program, Isabelle and her family were supported every step of the way with compassion, reassurance, and care designed specifically for children. The program helps young patients feel informed, comfortable, and empowered before surgery, while also supporting parents during what can often be an emotional experience.
Like many children facing surgery, Isabelle admits she was nervous.
“I was a tiny bit scared,” she shared.
That fear quickly began to fade when she met Alex, a Child Life Specialist who introduced Isabelle to Pepper, an interactive robot designed to help children better understand what to expect before surgery in a fun and engaging way.
Together, Alex and Pepper walked Isabelle through each step of the process in child-friendly language, helping transform fear into curiosity and confidence. Isabelle learned what would happen during surgery, what anaesthesia would feel like, and even had the chance to choose the flavour of her mask.
“It was strawberry!” Isabelle said proudly.
For Carolyn, the experience was equally transformative.
“Having someone like Alex made a huge difference,” she shared. “I couldn’t imagine going through any other procedure without someone like her.”
At , the Child Life Program recognizes that small details can make a big impact for children and families. Young patients are empowered with choices, even in how they enter the operating room. Whether by bike, wagon, mini Tesla, or Zamboni,
children are given opportunities to feel more comfortable and in control during an unfamiliar experience.
For Isabelle, those moments helped surgery feel less frightening and more manageable. For Carolyn, they provided something just as important: peace of mind.
“It’s night and day,” Carolyn explained. “At other hospitals, we didn’t know what to expect. No one really explained the procedures, and it was rather traumatizing. But at Humber, knowing exactly what’s going to happen to your child is incredibly reassuring.”
Behind every interaction was a care team committed not only to treating Isabelle’s medical needs but also supporting her emotional wellbeing and helping her family feel safe and informed.
That’s what makes programs like Child Life so important. They remind families that healthcare is not just about procedures or technology, it’s about caring for the whole person, especially the youngest patients who need comfort and reassurance most.
Today, Isabelle’s story is a reflection of how compassionate, patient-centered care can completely transform the surgical experience for children and families alike.
At , every child deserves to feel brave, supported, and cared for, and thanks to programs like Child Life, families like Isabelle’s never having to face surgery alone.
