“Every stage of my involvement with the hospital was rewarding. There were though, some moments I will never forget…. the ground-breaking ceremony when all the stakeholders put their shovels in the ground in unison and we knew that the project would get built; and then subsequently, when they dug the hole for the foundation, and we could see the scale of what would become a 1.8 million square foot facility. These were thrilling events. ” Donald Loeb

Donald and Lorraine Loeb recently made the generous decision to make Humber River Health Foundation the owner and beneficiary a life insurance policy—a creative and impactful way to leave a legacy, and a meaningful reflection of their personal connection to the hospital.

With four grown and independent children, Donald and Lorraine realized they no longer needed the security of this policy; but rather than simply giving it up, they decided that it was a better idea—from both a charitable giving and tax benefit perspective—to name as the owner and beneficiary of the policy.

Their reasons for choosing Humber for their generous commitment date back to 1999/2000 when Donald joined ’s Board of Directors, subsequently accepting the role of Chair of the Board and eventually Chair of the Building Committee.

“I felt like I could make a difference at Humber,” says Donald. “And leading the board through the creation of the new Humber River Hospital [now ]—from the key decision not to renovate but rather to seek a greenfield site and to design and build a state-of-the-art facility—through to the official opening —was a profound experience. I was fortunate to work with the hospital’s current CEO Barb Collins and her predecessor, the, to help conceive the remarkable vision that would become . We were then able to realize the vision with the support and commitment of the Board and the talented and dedicated individuals on the building committee; we were highly focused on completing it on time and on budget, and we succeeded!”

“Every stage of my involvement with the hospital was rewarding,” remembers Donald. “There were though, some moments I will never forget…. the ground-breaking ceremony when all the stakeholders put their shovels in the ground in unison and we knew that the project would get built; and then subsequently, when they dug the hole for the foundation, and we could see the scale of what would become a 1.8 million square foot facility. These were thrilling events. Of course, touring the finished hospital and seeing it function as planned and understanding its impact on patient care and even enjoying the fantastic views from the top floors were heartwarming.”

Donald and Lorraine’s belief in made the decision to name Humber as beneficiary of a life insurance policy quite easily. Also surprisingly easy was the process of setting up this arrangement. They collaborated closely with their financial advisor and with Caterina Magisano, the Foundation’s Vice President of Development, to turn their vision into reality; Humber’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee was also available to provide support with additional wealth insurance expertise along the way.

By making a commitment to leave a legacy at , the Loebs have become the newest members of our Aspen Grove Society, a group of donors committed to supporting Humber through their estate planning.

The Loebs decided not to direct their donation to a specific program or area, but rather to let the hospital allocate it. “My decades of working with senior management has taught me that they have the clearest insight as to where the needs are greatest.”

“We are pleased to remain involved with Humber,” says Lorraine. “Once the hospital opened, it was rewarding to see that people were coming from all over the world to tour the first fully digital hospital in North America. Now, we are regularly hearing from people we know who are going out of their way to choose Humber not only for the hospital’s leading-edge facilities but also its reputation for compassionate care.

If inspired by Donald and Lorraine’s journey, the team can guide you. For a confidential discussion, please contact Caterina Magisano at 416-242-1000 Ext 81516 or cmagisano@hrh.ca.

The Honey & Barry Legacy Foundation is more than just a tribute to my parents; it’s a living testament to their values and the change they wanted to see in the world,” says Alex. “I’m honoured to continue their work and hope to make a meaningful impact.”

Alex Krawczyk, daughter of the late Honey and Dr. Barry Sherman, embodies her parents’ commitment to giving. This week, Alex took a significant step forward to continuing her parents’ legacy with a $10 million donation to from the , which she established in 2020.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Alex is proud of her parents’ profound connection with the community and Humber. “My father took great pride in building connections with the Humber River Hospital community,” says Alex.

Over the years, Honey and Barry were strong champions of Humber River Hospital and played a pivotal role in building the new hospital. Starting in 1998, Dr. Sherman served as honorary chair for the hospital building campaign and provided the largest gift. “Through their charitable work with a variety of organizations, including Humber River Hospital, my parents exemplified the importance of giving back,” says Alex.

As a registered nurse, Alex has seen firsthand the struggles faced by many people in accessing healthcare. “Working as a nurse in the community opened my eyes to the stark realities faced by people who are often overlooked,” says Alex. “Like my parents, I believe I have a responsibility to work towards building a more equitable healthcare system.”

Through the work of her Foundations, Alex supports initiatives that address systemic gaps in healthcare access. “It is encouraging to know that Humber is committed to ensuring community members will be included in the consultation process for the reimagined Finch site,” says Alex.

Alex is determined to carry forward her parents’ vision. “The Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation is more than just a tribute to my parents; it’s a living testament to their values and the change they wanted to see in the world,” says Alex. “I’m honoured to continue their work and hope to make a meaningful impact.”

Alex’s work in the community has inspired her to pursue a master’s degree in public health. But she remains a nurse at heart. On a recent visit to the Reactivation Care Centre, Finch Campus, Alex played dominos with a group of patients, and her warmth and empathy shone through.

Alex is most at peace composing and recording music (a passion of hers), a process that helped her following the tragic loss of her parents. “Music is one of the ways I process grief and find strength to carry on. I hope that my music encourages others who are also struggling with loss and promotes healing,” says Alex. She was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award in 2023 for her debut album, Le Olam.

In her journey, Alex Krawczyk stays true to her parents’ values through the Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation, striving to help others, embracing her compassionate nature, and leaving a legacy that goes beyond just giving. is profoundly grateful for her commitment to supporting accessible community healthcare.

TORONTO, ONTARIO – is thrilled to announce a donation of $10 million from the to revitalize healthcare in one of Toronto’s most underserved communities. With this donation, the 17-acre Finch campus in the Jane and Finch Corridor will be re-imagined with a dedicated focus on closing the healthcare disparity gap in North West Toronto.

This investment is crucial given the area’s pressing healthcare needs. People living in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood face many socio-economic challenges. The community is home to the highest percentage of lone-parent families, racialized and marginalized populations in Toronto. Additionally, our surrounding neighbourhoods have a disproportionate number of low-income seniors aged 80 and above who live alone and need their complex healthcare needs addressed closer to home.

This $10 million donation is the Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation’s largest charitable gift since its inception by Ms. Krawcyzk in 2020.

“The Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation’s gift will transform people’s lives in one of our city’s most diverse communities. We are planning for the future but recognize the urgency of our community’s needs today,” said Sandra Sualim, President and CEO of . “We are grateful to Alex Krawcyzk for establishing this new foundation and building on the relationship her parents began with us more than 30 years ago.”

The reimagined facility will be designed around specific community needs. It will identify a range of options to address any misalignment between current and future service delivery and potential solutions that will deliver the greatest short and long-term value for Ontarians. The assessment will explore various areas of care including:

  • A fully accessible urgent care clinic
  • Diagnostic imaging and lab services to enhance care and increase community access
  • Potentially, a new acute hospital on the site

After meeting with a member of ’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee, Luvraj knew how she could best make a lasting impact: giving through life insurance.

Luvraj wanted to make a lasting impact in her community. As a Chiropractor and with a baby on the way, she was committed to give back in a way that was meaningful to the community and made sense for her family.

With her practice being near Humber, she learned a lot about the hospital’s innovations through her patients. She loved how invests in technology to improve care, and how they are constantly pioneering new ways to make healthcare more accessible to everyone.

“I have not seen anything like the in other organizations,” says Luvraj. “This hospital has won a lot of awards for innovations and it’s really interesting to see how everything is so organized and how it (Command Centre) allows the hospital to have eyes on everything.”

After meeting with a member of ’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee, she knew how she could best make a lasting impact: giving through life insurance.

“My husband and I lost family members to cardiovascular diseases, illnesses, ailments,” she says. “It was only natural to make an impact this way.”

Giving through life insurance can be great way to leave an impactful gift that is beneficial for business owners. It often makes more sense from a taxation perspective, as an example. She was surprised and impressed at how seamless the process was.

“There are people from backgrounds other than healthcare: such as finance, marketing, even people with their own businesses,” she says. “It’s nice to see everyone can come together and share their expertise and experience.”

Luvraj is proud to leave a legacy gift that can improve healthcare in the community that her child’s generation will benefit from.

After building and growing a thriving business, Allan, Chandra, and their children are looking to give back to their community at , a natural extension of their family values.

Building a Business, Raising a Family

“Our whole family feels grateful knowing we can do this, making a difference, and touching people’s lives.” says Omisha, daughter of Allan Ramkissoon and Chandra Narayan.

Allan Ramkissoon was only seventeen when he began his career in the airline industry at the GTAA as a baggage handler. He went on to study avionics, and over the years gained experience in many areas of the airport, including pushing and towing planes, de-icing before flights, developing flight load plans, and security – All of which he learned first-hand.

Along the way, Allan married his wife Chandra and together they had four kids, Aneal, Omisha, Govinda, and Sanjay.

“From a young age, we learned a lot about family, kindness, and the power of relationships from my parents,” says Aneal. “Culture and giving back is very important to us – Many of my early memories are from our visits to the Vishnu Mandir Hindu Temple every Sunday.”

In 2010, Allan decided to start Airside Security Access Inc., providing security services for contract workers and other personnel at airports within Southern Ontario, which includes Toronto Pearson Airport, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Hamilton International Airport, London International Airport, Buttonville Airport, and Waterloo International Airport with a staff of up to 150 pre-pandemic.

“I remember one night when the kids were quite young, Allan was working on paperwork at home, and I thought ‘I can help you with this stuff’,” says Chandra. “Thirteen years later, here we are! All of our kids have worked with us in very hands-on roles. We have helped accomplish many major projects like the tunnel from the mainland to the island, terminal expansions, and countless restaurant openings. I thoroughly enjoy the work we do, and we all like to see our projects through to completion.”

“All four of us are very different but we’re aligned and have learned so much about communicating and compromising with each other,” says Govinda. “A lot of that experience comes from running a business together.”

“We all take a lot of pride in getting it done, in being reliable,” says Sanjay. “To know that big projects are getting done thanks to what we do means a lot. I grew up seeing my dad with his boots on the ground whenever it was needed, and that’s something he has passed down to all of us.”

Leaving a Legacy at

Allan and Chandra were first introduced to by Sisi Chakrabarti, a close family friend and member of our Planned Giving Advisory Committee.

“Leaving our gift through life insurance made sense from a financial perspective,” says Allan. “We know that one day we will pass on, and this way we can help as many people as we can.”

“I have always wanted to give back in a big way, but I didn’t know where to start,” says Chandra. “Originally we had considered naming a room at Humber River Hospital, but after some thought Alan said he wanted to name a full Unit. Allan doesn’t ask for his own needs, let alone his wants, so when he said that, I just knew it was important to him.”

In recognition of the family’s generosity, their donor signage will be proudly displayed on 9 East, reading: Allan Ramkissoon, Chandra Narayan & Children Inpatient Unit East

“It was the first space offered to us, and in our culture the number 9 and the East direction are both auspicious. It felt like a sign. Since we learned about this opportunity of giving, we’re looking for even more ways we can help,” says Chandra, who had joined the committee for Illuminate: A Diwali Celebration.

“My parents have taught us that when you have the best intentions, anything is possible,” says Omisha. “Our whole family feels grateful knowing we can do this, making a difference, and touching people’s lives.”

Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Mark Halpern and I’m the CEO and Founder of WEALTHinsurance.com, an independent high-net-worth advisory firm specializing in Estate Planning, Life Insurance, Tax Minimization and Philanthropy.

“First and foremost, planned giving is not about disinheriting your family. It’s about adopting charity and disinheriting the tax department.” says Mark. “People don’t always realize that they have three possible beneficiaries: the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), family and charity. They can choose two of them.”

What makes you passionate about Humber?
Humber is a stunning hospital! But what really sets apart is the people who work there. Whether I’m talking to doctors, to people who work at the Foundation or to grateful patients, it’s apparent that people at Humber are passionate about the Hospital and the extraordinary care they are providing.

What led to your involvement with ?
I never intended to be chair of the Planned Giving Advisory Committee, but when I toured the Hospital, I quickly realized just what a special place it is. I have realized that this is how medicine should be done and I feel an obligation to help and to get other people involved.

What is something you wish everyone understood about leaving a gift in their Will?
First and foremost, planned giving is not about disinheriting your family. It’s about adopting charity and disinheriting the tax department. People don’t always realize that they have three possible beneficiaries: the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), family and charity. They can choose two of them. Also, keep in mind that the government understands that it can’t possibly sustain all the social infrastructure and programs we need in this country. That’s why it makes it easier, through incentives, for people to donate. Finally, I’d like to reinforce that the least effective way of giving is cash, credit cards and cheques – which is how 96% of the population are currently choosing to support charities.

Donors are also not aware that charitable donations at death can mitigate 100% of estate taxes, including being used for the prior year too. That means for every $2 given to charity, it will save $1 of tax. We have many ideas with life insurance to make this happen for pennies on the dollar or on a cash-flow neutral basis. It just requires a conversation. And there is no AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) on death which makes this type of planning even more important.

What do you hope to accomplish on HRHF’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee?
I’d love to help Humber create hundreds of millions of dollars of planned legacy gifts. I’m determined to encourage the people who believe in Humber to make gifts—from doctors to patients and everyone in between.

What are some of your other philanthropic priorities? My passions include helping to raise the bar in my industry by sharing my experience, mentoring financial advisors, educating allied professionals, and doing my own philanthropic work.

Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Alan Naiman and I’m a Tax Partner at KPMG. I work with a lot of families on estate planning, tax planning and tax compliance. I have a great interest in the estate planning field, helping families preserve wealth for the next generation and developing effective strategies for charitable gifting.

What makes you passionate about ?

“People should understand that donating a cash gift to support the charities that are important to you is not necessarily the best choice,” says Alan. “There are many benefits to donating through your will and through such vehicles as public company securities.”

I’m really impressed by the technology that has been embraced and implemented by Humber—from the immediately visible equipment that improves patients’ experiences and outcomes to the technology that keeps things moving behind the scenes.

I visited the Pharmacy Department on a tour of the Hospital and it was amazing to see all the controls that are in place to make sure that the right medication in the right dosage is going to the right patient. Technology really cuts down on the margin for error and improves security. Humber is a hospital for the 21st century!

What led to your involvement with the Foundation?

My family has had nothing but positive experiences with the Hospital. We hear every day about the strains on our healthcare system and I am very happy to share my professional expertise to support .

When the opportunity to get involved with HRHF’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee came up earlier this year, I was immediately interested.

I’ve always sought out volunteer opportunities that are meaningful to me and my family—and to which I have a personal connection.

I wish more people would look at aligning their gifting strategies with healthcare—in addition to supporting the community, you never know when you or your loved ones are going to need care.

What is something you wish everyone understood about leaving a gift in their Will?

People should understand that donating a cash gift to support the charities that are important to you is not necessarily the best choice. There are many benefits to donating through your will and through such vehicles as public company securities.

To me, the choice is that you either give your money to the government through taxes, or you direct a portion of it to a charity that’s near and dear to your heart. More and more, my family clients are becoming interested in this tax-effective way to create a legacy and support the organizations and causes that are important to them, like !

Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, I’m Yanique Russell and I’m a Canadian Attorney who is the Founder and CEO of Global Immigration Services Jamaica, Yanique Russell Law & CollegePass Recruitment Inc. I hold a double major in Environmental Science from the University of the West Indies, Mona, an LLB from the University of London and two LLMs (law masters) from Osgoode Hall Law School.

As a lawyer, I practice in the areas of Canadian Immigration and Estates Law. As a Canadian immigrant, my passion to serve my community led me to launch my college recruitment company with a mission to make the international study experience more accessible to Caribbean and Latin Americans.

What makes you passionate about Humber River Hospital Foundation?

My life’s purpose is to positively impact the lives of everyone I come across and Humber River Hospital Foundation’s mission succinctly aligns with my quest to add value to people through service. I am passionate about Humber River Hospital’s use of technology and innovation to improve healthcare and increase the community’s access to premier healthcare because it presents a wonderful opportunity for me to serve my community. I also believe after my experience as a black woman who has been expected to tolerate pain longer and whose cries for help during childbirth at another hospital were silenced, if I am able to increase awareness of the need for, and the chances of my community gaining access to innovative healthcare solutions, then I would have fulfilled my purpose.

What do you hope to accomplish as a member of our Planned Giving Advisory Committee?

I joined the Planned Giving Advisory Committee because I was impressed by its vision and mission. Being a member of the committee affords me the opportunity to work with other amazing professionals who are passionate about improving access to healthcare and overall community service. As an estate lawyer of the Planned Giving Advisory Committee, I am able to help to educate community members on the direct benefits of leaving a gift to HRH Foundation.

There are several persons who are still of the belief that planned giving is an arduous task. Our aim is that our joint work as a committee, we will be able to educate and assist persons who wish to support the mission of HRH Foundation. I hope to be able to use the law to positively impact my community and effect change through advising and guiding givers through the process.

Is there a Program of Care that you are particularly passionate about?

I am most passionate about Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Pregnancy and childbirth, though remarkable, can be very dangerous, even for a healthy mother. We have seen the statistics that show the neglect and mistreatment women of color experience during such a vulnerable time such as childbirth. In 2019, I experienced 22 hours of labour at another hospital before the doctors and nurses believed that I really was unable to deliver the baby naturally. Their ultrasound results showed a 6lb baby and to them, a 33-year-old woman should be able to push a baby that size. If the hospital had sufficient technology, they would have been able to tell my baby was actually 10lbs and not 6, and would have concluded way earlier that I would require a c-section. I think it was all those hours of non- movement that caused blood clots to develop in my leg, and eventually getting to my lung. I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism two weeks later during class.

I am therefore very passionate about working towards a systematic approach to reduce and prevent pregnancy and childbirth complications and mortality, especially in the black community.

Can you tell us more about your amazing mentorship program for law students the Caribbean and Latin America? Why do you feel strongly about helping these students?

To whom much is given, much is expected. I was mentored and supported by lawyers and law coaches during my time as a law student at Osgoode Hall and this provided a little padding as I traversed the licensing journey. It is important to be able to connect with individuals who have travelled the road you intend on taking, so as to be able to learn from their experience, and avoid some of the pitfalls and roadblocks, because of the guidance of others. When I landed in Canada in 2018, I was clueless about the licensing process. Currently, there are lawyers and law students in the Caribbean and Latin American region at large who are totally unaware of the Canadian licensing process. I was helped, so I have made it my duty to help others. Therefore, I have embarked on a mission to educate, mentor and sponsor internationally trained law students and lawyers who are seeking an opportunity to be licensed or re-licensed in Canada. It is my way of throwing the rope back and I get an opportunity to meet amazing persons, hear some beautiful stories, and to ignite hope in the lives of individuals. It is an honour and a privilege and an amazingly rewarding opportunity just to be able to pay it forward.

I feel strongly about helping students from the region because most of these countries are seen as third-world countries. It is therefore perceived as a mammoth mission to pursue international studies, let alone becoming a lawyer in a first world country as Canada. Representation is critical. A mission is much easier achieved if you know it has already been attained by someone like you. Sometimes, all that is required is a little motivation – hearing the story of someone who did it before you, for you to realize that it is possible. For you to catch a glimmer of hope and appreciate that it is not as farfetched as you first thought it was. I enjoy motivating others to become their full selves, and if that is a Canadian lawyer- I am happy to guide them to find their place.

What is something you wish everyone understood about estate planning?

I wish everyone understood that besides death, the other certainty is taxes. In estate planning, any two of either the government, your loved ones or the charity may get their assets. It’s much better to leave a gift to a charity and benefit directly from the tax implications of charitable bequests, than to leave their assets to the government. Planned giving is rewarding and your gift can make a huge impact to a worthy cause. You help make a difference when decide to leave a gift in your will. With a voice of compassion and an act of kindness, we can build a better future for someone else.

We are hoping to add even more lawyers to our Planned Giving Advisory Committee – What would you say to another lawyer who was on the fence about getting involved?

If you are looking for an opportunity to be able to serve the community and support a worthy cause, you should get off the fence and become a member of the Planned Giving Committee. I believe true wealth is being able to positively impact the lives of others and if you are on a journey to attain true wealth, then you should get involved with helping others.

We have to admit (despite the weather) we are thrilled to be heading into the holiday season; a magical time of year with sparkling lights, warm drinks, and time with family.

It’s also an exciting time of year for us at Humber River Hospital Foundation with many donors choosing to make end of year donations, to take advantage of the tax benefits!

Thanks to your donations, patients likeEduardoare able to receive the support they need in our Child & Adolescent Mental Health Program, ourEndovascular Surgeons canrepair hearts and blood vesselsguided by leading-edge imaging technology, andwe are expanding ourRobotic Surgery Programto help even more Canadians.

Here’s a quick video from our friend on our Planned Giving Advisory Committee Anthony Gordon, CEO and Financial Advisor at FiduSure Financial Inc., who shares his tips and tricks to mitigate taxes with philanthropy:

Our team is always available to discuss this type of giving, or any other planned giving options like leaving a gift in your Will, to gift of stocks, to giving through RRSPs, RRIF and more. We affectionately call this group of donors the Aspen Grove Society– an homage to the public art project on our Hospital building. In an aspen grove—though it has different colours, shapes and different sizes—all the trees come from one root system.
